NEWARK — After two years of trying to understand the circumstances surrounding her ex-husband’s death, Lucia Pires says she’s exhausted.
On July 12, 2008, an off-duty Newark police detective driving through a Newark intersection struck Joao Marques, killing the father of Pires’ children instantly.
NEWARK — Authorities swept through a Newark hotel where two people were recently killed and arrested 28 people wanted for outstanding warrants today, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

NEWARK — When Joseph Iadipaoli was convicted of molesting four Newark children, the Essex County prosecutor asked the judge to sentence him to 140 years behind bars, more time than a murderer.
"The entire system is against him. The prisoners are against him," said defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman. "This is the bottom of the barrel for criminal cases."

NEWARK – Two fatal drive-by shootings in Newark that happened within minutes of each other and 4 miles apart early today appear to be unrelated, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Both victims were from Newark and both were shot by someone who fired multiple bullets from a passing vehicle, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
Separately, authorities say a Montclair man who died today from injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in Newark last week was the victim of a homicide.
NEWARK — A lawyer for the Irvington man accused in last week’s fatal hit-and-run of a 5-year-old girl in Newark said the child was struck after she ran out onto the street.
But the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said the man, Saleem Wright, 24, who pleaded not guilty today in Superior Court, was speeding when his Mercedes convertible hit Julianne Vega, who was crossing Columbia Avenue. Julianne died at University Hospital, shortly after the 8:30 p.m. accident last Thursday.
